Lok Sabha Elections: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a selection committee meeting was convened to finalize the appointment of new election commissioners. Following thorough deliberations, the committee has approved the names of two distinguished individuals to serve as election commissioners.
Gyanesh Kumar, hailing from Kerala, and Sukhwinder Sandhu, representing Punjab, have been elected as the latest additions to the Election Commission. This significant development was confirmed by selection committee member Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary.
The selection process involved a meticulous evaluation of a panel of candidates prepared by a search committee led by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Subsequently, the selection committee, chaired by Prime Minister Modi, reviewed the recommendations and finalized the appointments.
Upon the recommendation of the selection committee, President Draupadi Murmu will formally appoint the two newly elected members of the election panel. This appointment comes in light of recent vacancies within the Election Commission due to the resignation of Arun Goyal and the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey.
With two vacancies in the Election Commission, it is imperative to ensure the presence of a complete three-member commission, especially in anticipation of forthcoming general elections.
A diverse array of candidates was proposed for the esteemed position of election commissioners. Among them were senior bureaucrats such as Tarun Bajaj, Durga Shankar Mishra, Vini Mahajan, Rajesh Bhushan, and Sanjay Kumar Mishra. Additionally, former chiefs of governmental bodies such as the CBDT and NIA were also under consideration.
The appointment of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhwinder Sandhu as election commissioners marks a significant step in reinforcing the Election Commission's operational capacity and ensuring effective governance of electoral processes in the nation.
