PM Modi apologizes: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his regrets on Tuesday to senior citizens over 70 years old in Delhi and West Bengal, following the state governments' refusal to participate in the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. He attributed this lack of participation to political interests that have obstructed the program’s implementation in these states.

Addressing health initiatives

During the inauguration of various health projects at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in the national capital, coinciding with the 9th Ayurveda Day, PM Modi emphasized the significance of the national health scheme, which offers comprehensive hospitalization coverage of up to ₹5 lakh.

"I apologize to all elderly individuals above 70 years of age in Delhi and West Bengal. Unfortunately, I will not be able to serve you. I will gather information about your well-being, but I cannot provide assistance because the governments of Delhi and West Bengal have chosen not to join the Ayushman Yojana," he stated. The PM lamented that the elderly in these states are unable to benefit from the initiative due to political motivations.

A call for compassion

Modi criticized the "tendency to oppress the sick for political interests," describing it as contrary to humane values. He reiterated, "I can serve the people of the country, but the walls of political agendas prevent me from aiding the elderly in Delhi and West Bengal."

What is the Ayushman Bharat Yojana?

Notably, Delhi and West Bengal are among the states where the Central Government's Ayushman Bharat Yojana is not in effect. This scheme, launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, aims to provide free health insurance coverage to low-income families.

Modi also highlighted that India is being recognized globally as a significant hub for medical and wellness tourism.
