Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and directed him to take all necessary and appropriate measures to ensure the safety and security of civilians in the region. He also asked Amit Shah to visit the site of the attack to assess the ground situation. In response, the Home Minister has called a high-level meeting for review, in which special attention will be given to Jammu and Kashmir. Along with the Pahalgam attack, the security of Jammu and Kashmir will also be reviewed in the meeting.
At least 12 tourists were injured when militants opened fire in the Pahalgam area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Security forces and police rushed to the spot soon after the attack. Ambulances were also sent to the spot in view of the possibility of injuries. The area has been sealed and a search operation has been launched to track down the attackers, he said. Security forces have intensified checking at all exit points to prevent the militants from escaping.
Reacting to the Pahalgam incident, BJP leader Ravinder Raina said it was an attack by "Pakistani terrorists" targeting innocent tourists in south Kashmir. Talking to reporters in Nowshera, Raina said, "Pakistani terrorists have carried out a cowardly terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam in South Kashmir. Cowardly Pakistani terrorists cannot face the brave soldiers of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and our paramilitary forces," he said.
"I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam that tragically killed five persons and injured many more. He said such violence is unacceptable and must be condemned. Historically, Kashmir has received warm welcome to tourists, making this rare phenomenon extremely worrying. A thorough investigation is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice and investigate potential security lapses. Ensuring the safety of visitors is paramount, and steps should be taken to prevent future attacks. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families," he said in a post on The X.
