The Opposition parties have strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response during the parliamentary no-confidence motion session, accusing him of neglecting to address the issue of Manipur violence for ‘90 minutes’ before touching upon the subject only after they staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha.

Members of the newly formed Opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A. staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha as Prime Minister Modi delivered his response to the motion of no confidence.

In a video message, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “For the initial 90 minutes of his speech, the Prime Minister conveniently skirted around the pressing issue of Manipur. However, when the INDIA Alliance, a collective voice of dissent, chose to stage a walkout, the PM’s calculated response was swift.”

O’Brien further stated, “I can tell you the positive – the teflon coating has gone, the sheen has vanished. Mr Narendra Modi after your speech today, one is quite confident that INDIA: ‘Jeetega Bharat’.”

Congress only worried about power, not poor: PM Narendra Modi in Parliament

During his speech, Prime Minister Modi criticised the Opposition, particularly the Congress, alleging that “they are not worried about the hunger of the poor, but only worried about power”.

He expressed confidence that his party would triumph in the upcoming general election and facetiously challenged the Opposition to be ‘better prepared’ for another no-confidence motion in 2028.

Amid these remarks, the Opposition repeatedly demanded a statement from the Prime Minister regarding the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, which has resulted in the loss of over 150 lives. The no-confidence motion was filed with the aim of urging Prime Minister Modi to address the Manipur situation.

Addressing the Manipur issue, PM Modi stated, “The entire country is with Manipur and the Centre and state governments are working together to restore peace in the state.”

However, the Congress party accused Prime Minister Modi of being gripped with ‘Congress-phobia’, asserting that his speech primarily targeted their party during the Lok Sabha session. Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress MP, highlighted that the Prime Minister spent the majority of his over two-hour speech criticising the Congress instead of addressing the Manipur crisis.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote, “At last you spoke in the House on the Manipur violence. We are sure that the pace of restoration of peace in Manipur will be faster, and people from relief camps will return to their homes. He will be rehabilitated, justice will be done to him.

“If you had given up your stubbornness and arrogance earlier, the valuable time of the Parliament would have been saved. Important bills would have been passed with good discussion. We are pained that on an unprecedented issue like the Manipur violence, the opposition had to use a parliamentary weapon like a no-confidence motion. But you also used the House as an election rally.”

Mamata Banerjee’s TMC wrote on Twitter, “Time allotted for Manipur: One minute. Time allotted for self-appreciation, digs at opposition, and big talk: Hours. PM Narendra Modi ji, how long will Manipur suffer owing to your IGNORANCE & INACTION?”

“This was not expected from PM Modi. His speech had jokes and jibes. People of Manipur expected him to heal their wounds and share their pain, but he failed to do so,” Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Kumar Jha told news agency ANI.
