New Delhi: A woman has reported a troubling case of alleged sexual harassment involving a Zomato delivery agent. In a detailed post on X, the woman recounted the incident that occurred when she ordered coffee late on a rainy Tuesday night in Ahmedabad. Despite the delivery being delayed, she expressed understanding and patience.
"The delivery partner was constantly apologizing for the delay while smiling, which made me uncomfortable, but I let it slide, thinking I was just being paranoid given the current situation in the country," she wrote in her post. The woman also noted that the delivery agent, identified as Shwetang Joshi, frequently talked about an injury he claimed to have, pointing to his foot.
During the incident, she shone her flashlight to examine his foot and was shocked to see his genitals exposed. He allegedly laughed and taunted her, saying 'Please help me, ma'am.' This disturbing behavior prompted her to report the incident to Zomato immediately. However, the company's subsequent response only added to her distress."
The Zomato customer care representative said they would investigate by listening to both sides of the story, mine and the delivery partner's," she wrote, I found it frustrating that they didn't take immediate action, especially since I wasn't seeking a refund. Instead, they put me on hold, telling me to 'wait till further notice', which felt like a dismissal of my concerns and experiences as a woman.
She mentioned that despite reporting the incident, she received no follow-up from Zomato initially, leaving her feeling unsafe about ordering food during emergencies. "Shame on you and your 'ethics' of delivering safely," she added.
Later updates revealed that Zomato eventually contacted her and took action. The delivery driver was terminated, and his license was revoked. Despite these measures, she still felt uneasy. "I won't say I feel safe now, I still feel unsafe, but they did what they could," she said. She admitted to being "traumatized and infuriated" and expressed concern for other women who face similar situations but remain silent. She also noted feeling "paranoid" about the possibility of the driver returning to her address but found some comfort in having legal support.
