State-owned oil marketing businesses cut the price of gasoline and diesel at the pump by ₹2 a litre, on Friday. Keep reading to find out how some members of the government reacted.

In response to the BJP-led Central government's decision to lower the price of gasoline and diesel by ₹2 per litre Congress leader P Chidambaram said on Thursday that a similar "sleight of hand" was used when the price of LPG was raised and then lowered before elections.

P Chidambaram's statement:

He asserted that the BJP government had previously raised the price of LPG cylinders by ₹700 and then lowered it by ₹100 in advance of the elections. Chidambaram stated that diesel and gasoline cases had involved the same type of trick.

Price reduction of petrol and diesel

In keeping with a campaign of pre-election incentives to customers that saw decreases in the rates of cooking gas and compressed natural gas for autos earlier this month, state-run oil marketing corporations lowered the pump costs of gasoline and diesel by ₹2 per liter starting on Friday. The petroleum ministry announced late on Thursday night on social media platform X that the prices of gasoline and diesel would be reduced.

Starting at 6 am on Friday, a liter of gasoline will cost ₹94.72 in Delhi, while a litre of diesel will cost ₹87.62. Due to variations in municipal taxes, rates will range from one city to the next. The oil marketing companies (OMCs), as per the ministry, notified them of the decision to adjust fuel prices.

What is the government doing?

Petrol Minister Hardeep Singh Puri wrote in Hindi in another post on X that the nation's skilled Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji has once again demonstrated that the welfare and comfort of India's family, which consists of crores of Indians, is his top priority by slashing the price of gasoline and diesel by ₹2.

According to a government official who asked to remain anonymous, it is anticipated that some BJP-ruled states, like Rajasthan, may lower the value-added tax (VAT) on gasoline and diesel as the PM had pledged during the most recent assembly elections.
