New Delhi: Students at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law in Patiala are holding a sit-in protest, demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr) Jai Shankar. The protests stem from allegations that he entered the university's girls' hostel without permission to conduct an unauthorized inspection.

Allegations of unauthorized entry

The controversy erupted on Sunday afternoon when the Vice Chancellor reportedly entered the girls’ hostel without prior consent from the residents. According to students, he first visited the hostel's mess for an inspection before moving on to check individual rooms, disregarding the privacy and consent of the female students. 

One student, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her concerns: “He also made inappropriate remarks about the attire of some girls present, which many of us found objectionable.” This incident has fueled anger among the student body, leading to widespread protests.

Ongoing sit-in and class boycott

Following the alleged incident, students organized a sit-in demonstration on the university campus, chanting slogans against the Vice Chancellor and insisting on his resignation. They have made it clear that they will continue their protest and boycott classes until action is taken regarding their demands.

The ongoing university protest has captured the attention of both the institution's administrative authorities and police, prompting an immediate response. Following reports of the demonstration, police officers promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation, yet despite their presence, the protesting students have remained unwavering and committed to their cause.
