Kerala: Nine more suspects have been arrested by Kerala police in relation to the case of a rape of a Dalit girl athlete at multiple places during her teen years. With this, 15 people have been taken into custody so far. The officials reported that the girl was exploited when she was still a minor by her coaches, fellow athletes, and classmates.

More than 60 people under investigation

Following her statement, the arrests were done in which, at present, 18-year-old victim states that she had been sexually assaulted more than five times since 16 years. Five FIRs have been registered from the statements of her across two police stations in the district of Pathanamthitta. More than 60 suspects are suspected; they are now identifying and nabbing others as well.

The case was brought to light through counseling sessions conducted by the Pathanamthitta Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The sessions were based on a report from the victim's teachers, who pointed out sudden changes in her behavior. The CWC alerted the law enforcement authorities, and thus, a full-fledged investigation was launched.

Evidence links suspects to victim

During the investigation, police discovered crucial evidence, including phone records and a personal diary kept by the victim. The diary and her father's phone revealed the identities of at least 40 people suspected to be involved in the crime. Other suspects outside Pathanamthitta are also under scrutiny.

Special investigation team led by Pathanamthitta Deputy Superintendent of Police is conducting the probe. The team expects to complete the statement recording from arrested persons by Sunday evening.

Stringent legal provisions invoked

The police have invoked sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The charges arise from the fact that the assaults started when the victim was just 13, according to the CWC chairman. The victim has been referred to a psychologist for further counseling.

Elaborating the investigation scope

The law enforcement department expects to file additional FIRs as the investigation unfolds. Officials are committed to ensuring justice in this deeply disturbing case that has shaken the state.
