The monsoon session of the Parliament begins today amid the political heat over the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the outrage over the situation prevailing in Manipur. The opposition has demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Manipur row, which was fuelled up after a horrific video of two women parading naked on the road by a group of men surfaced on social media, drawing massive calls for strict actions against the culprits. The opposition has warned of chaos in the absence of PM Modis stance on this.All about monsoon session:During the Parliaments monsoon session, the opposition is set to address major issues like Manipur row, Delhi Ordinance row, railway safety, unemployment, inflation, Indo-China border status, trade etc. In the Opposition, 105 members are against the Ordinance bill.Apart from these, the Centre has planned heavy legislative business for the monsoon session of Parliament beginning Thursday with Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023, among 31 bills on its agenda.An all-party meeting called by the Centre on Wednesday was attended by 34 parties and 44 leaders aimed at ensuring a smooth session that will continue until August 11, with almost 17 sittings. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that many important issues were raised during the same.“Currently, the government have 31 legislative items which have been identified. What we have to bring and what not we will decide later but at least 31 legislative items are fully ready now, ” the union minister said.Several parties plan to move an adjournment motion on Manipur violence and other issues on the first day of the session. The opposition demands the presence of PM Modi during the discussion.The outrage escalated today after the video of two tribal women being paraded naked surfaced. The women were allegedly gang-raped and the state police said an investigation is on.They demanded PM Modi make a statement in both houses of parliament, Meanwhile, in a video message, TMCs Derek OBrien said if the Prime Minister does not speak, he would be responsible for the disruption that would follow. “Enough of Mann ki Baat, time for Manipur ki Baat,” he said.Taking notes from the situation in Manipur, the central government said it is ready for a discussion on it. Pralhad Joshi said that the Centre was ready to discuss all matters in parliament, including the 2-month-long violence in Manipur, in which more than 80 people have died.Parliaments monsoon session will continue till August 11, with 17 sittings during the session. The session will begin in the old Parliament Building but will shift to the new building later.The new parliament was inaugurated by PM Modi in May this year. It offers more space than the current building which was built in 1927.
