Parliament Security Breach: Chaos ensued in Parliament on Thursday as the Opposition, reacting to the suspension of 13 MPs following the security breach, demanded a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah. However, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi defended the government's position, emphasising that the Speaker is the custodian of the House.

Speaker's Assertion on Security

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla asserted his responsibility for ensuring security in the Parliament complex, stating, "The entire Parliament Secretariat comes under the jurisdiction of Parliament... As Lok Sabha Speaker, it is my responsibility to ensure everybody's security."

Government's Compliance with Speaker's Orders

Minister Pralhad Joshi defended the government's stance, stating, "The Speaker is the guardian or custodian of the House... The government is merely complying with the orders of the Speaker." He urged Opposition members not to politicize the matter and cooperate with the ongoing probe.

Opposition Condemns Suspensions

The Opposition condemned the suspension of 13 MPs, calling it "horrible" and "undemocratic." Congress leader KC Venugopal termed it a "murder of democracy." RJD MP Manoj Jha criticised the government, stating, "A government that can't keep its Parliament secure can't keep the country safe."

Questions on BJP MP's Role

TMC leader Shashi Panja raised questions about the actions taken against BJP MP Pratap Simha, alleging his involvement in providing passes to individuals responsible for the security breach. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh reiterated the demand for Home Minister Amit Shah's statement.

Suspension Criticised as 'Unfortunate'

Revolutionary Socialist Party MP NK Premachandran called the suspension of MPs "unfortunate" and questioned the lack of action against the BJP member involved. DMK MP TR Baalu called the suspension 'wrong,' stating that the MPs behaved within parliamentary rules.

Revised Number of Suspended MPs

A total of 13 MPs were suspended, with Joshi clarifying that one member was mistakenly included in the list and subsequently excluded. The suspension followed the security breach in Parliament, with two men jumping into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitor's gallery.

Legal Action Against Accused

The Patiala House Court granted 7-day custody to four accused persons connected to the security breach. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The situation continues to unfold, with the government defending its actions and the Opposition demanding accountability amid the aftermath of the security breach.
