New Delhi: After a concerning incident that unfolded in the Parliament complex, security measures have undergone a comprehensive revamp. This includes the introduction of distinct entrances designated for Members of Parliament, staff members, and press personnel.

Visitors, upon eventual re-entry, will be channelled through a dedicated fourth gate, with the issuance of visitor passes temporarily halted. In a proactive move, the visitors' gallery is slated to be encased in glass, deterring unauthorized access to the Lok Sabha chamber.

Body scanners to be placed

To fortify the security infrastructure, the installation of state-of-the-art body scan machines, akin to those deployed in airports, is set to be implemented within the Parliament premises. This technological upgrade aims to heighten the screening process and ensure a more robust security posture.

Increased security personnel

Responding to the breach, there has been a surge in the number of security personnel within the Parliament building. This strategic reinforcement seeks to fortify the internal security apparatus and mitigate potential threats effectively.

What actually happened?

Following the breach, the two individuals involved in the incident have been identified as Sagar Sharma from Lucknow and D Manoranjan from Mysuru. Both were subdued and confronted by Members of Parliament. Meanwhile, two others, Amol Shinde from Latur and Neelam Devi from Haryana's Hisar, ignited smoke canisters outside the complex.

Delhi Police's anti-terror cell has taken charge of the investigation, shedding light on additional conspirators, including Lalit Jha and Vicky Sharma, who are currently evading authorities.

Hiding smoke canisters in shoes

Notably, the two intruders concealed smoke canisters within their shoes, circumventing the stringent security procedures in place. This revelation prompts a reassessment of existing security measures to adapt to evolving threats.

How did Parliamentary security system looked until now?

The prevailing security system traces its roots to the overhaul post the 2011 terror attack on the old Parliament building. This tragic event spurred a transition from a three-tier process to a more rigorous four-tier security arrangement.

The existing security mechanisms included thorough frisking, baggage checks, and restrictions on personal items. Intriguingly, the recent breach prompts introspection into the efficacy of these protocols, especially in light of the evasive tactics employed by the perpetrators.

Towards a safer, resilient Parliament

As the Parliament adapts to these transformative security enhancements, the focus remains on fortifying the safety of the institution. The confluence of technological advancements, personnel reinforcement, and revised protocols aims to ensure that the hallowed halls of democracy stand resilient against emerging threats.
