New Delhi: India’s Praveen Kumar has added another chapter to his growing legacy by clinching the gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 event at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The 21-year-old Noida native cleared an impressive 2.08 meters, surpassing his previous personal best of 2.07 meters, which had earned him a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics.

Historic win for India

Praveen Kumar’s victory makes him only the second Indian to win a Paralympic high jump gold, following in the footsteps of Mariyappan Thangavelu. This gold marks his second consecutive Paralympic medal, further solidifying his position as one of India's premier para-athletes.

Praveen’s gold medal is part of India’s remarkable showing at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, where the nation’s tally now stands at 26 medals, including six golds, nine silvers, and 11 bronzes. Notably, Praveen became the third Indian to medal in high jump at these Games, following Sharad Kumar’s silver and Mariyappan Thangavelu’s bronze in the men’s high jump T63 category. This achievement not only adds to India’s medal count but also highlights the growing strength of para-athletics in the country.
