In Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the cornerstone for the Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute on Sunday. The project, worth ₹218 crore, aims to provide advanced medical treatment for complex diseases like cancer. The institute is being constructed within Bageshwar Dham, strengthening the BJP government's initiative to integrate religious sites with developmental projects.

Bageshwar Baba’s remark on Pakistan

During the event, Bageshwar Dham head Dhirendra Krishna Shastri made a striking remark about Pakistan. He stated, "Modi Ji, ever since you became Prime Minister, even people in Pakistan are saying, ‘Take us back’." His statement blended religious sentiments with political rhetoric, portraying PM Modi as a global leader alongside figures like Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

A new model: Hospitals in temples?

The Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute represents an innovative step in healthcare services. Spread over 10.9 hectares, the first phase includes a 100-bed cancer treatment center, offering free medical care to economically weaker sections. This initiative is expected to improve healthcare accessibility in the Bundelkhand region.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav praised the initiative, stating, "This hospital and research center will be a milestone for Bundelkhand, proving that temples can contribute significantly to development." Before laying the foundation, PM Modi also offered prayers at the Bageshwar Dham temple, reinforcing his strong ties with Hindu religious institutions.

Religious institutions and development

This project highlights the growing role of religious institutions in governance and development. While some view it as a progressive move towards public welfare, critics argue that government policies are increasingly aligning with religious organizations, raising concerns in a democratic society.

Alongside this initiative, PM Modi also inaugurated the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal, attended by representatives from over 60 countries and 300+ business leaders. This indicates the government’s readiness to involve religious institutions in development, sparking debates on whether it further blurs the line between religion and politics.
