The Indian government acted swiftly against Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chair and decided to close the Wagah-Attari border and postpone the SAARC Visa Waiver Scheme.

Measures against Pakistan

The government has cancelled visas of Pakistani nationals and has also provided them a time limit to depart India. Pakistani nationals entering via the Attari border on valid certificates have been provided time until May 1 to depart, whereas those who were under SAARC Visa Waiver Scheme (SVES) visas will be asked to depart within less than 48 hours. The action is regarded as a major escalation of hostilities between the two nations.

Impact on bilateral trade

The Wagah-Attari border closure will also impact not only the movement of people but also bilateral trade between India and Pakistan. The border is one of the main points of entry for trade between the two nations, and its closure will have severe economic consequences. The Kartarpur Corridor, however, has remained open for pilgrims traveling to the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan.

Strong condemnation of the attack

The CCS deeply condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and extended its deepest condolence to the families of the victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the perpetrators of the attack would be given more punishment than they had ever thought. The government's tough reaction is being regarded as a warning signal to Pakistan that India will not accept terrorism.

All-party meeting

There is to be an all-party meeting in the evening to discuss the Pahalgam attack as well as the government's response. The meeting will afford the opportunity for all parties to meet and discuss the way forward. The government has indicated that it will take firm action against terrorism as well as those who abet it.

Government's resolve

The decision of the government to close down the Wagah-Attari border and scrap the SAARC Visa Waiver Scheme reflects its commitment to acting decisively against Pakistan. The government's actions are a reaction to Pakistan's ongoing encouragement of terrorism in India.

The Pahalgam terror attack has resulted in a major escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan. The government's firm reaction reflects its determination to act against terrorism.
