New Delhi: The investigation into the Pahalgam attack is ongoing at several levels. Investigators identified five terrorists on Wednesday. These include three Pakistani nationals and two residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have intensified efforts to catch the conspirators of the biggest terrorist attack in the region in nearly two decades.
The identified Pakistani nationals include Asif Fauji (Musa), Suleman Shah (Yunus), and Abu Talha (Asif), according to agencies. Two other operatives from the Valley - Adil Gurri, a local resident of Bijbehara in Anantnag who had gone to Pakistan in 2018, and Ahsan, a resident of Pulwama who had gone to Pakistan in 2018 - have also been identified. The terrorists have recently infiltrated into India after receiving years of training in Pakistan, but Fauji and Shah have been active in Jammu and Kashmir for some time and were involved in previous attacks, including in Poonch.
Officials said the attackers spoke in Urdu while talking to civilians and then shot them at close range. Any tourist who refused to follow instructions to prove his religious identity was killed immediately.
There are no CCTV cameras in any of the establishments near the Baisaran meadows, which means investigators are largely relying on information shared by survivors. It is suspected that the attackers fled to the high hills of Pir Panjal after the attack. Officials said the role of Saifullah Kasuri, an aide of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed, is being investigated. In a video shared on social media, Kasuri can be seen saying on February 2 this year that “Kashmir will become a 'holy land' by February 2, 2026” and “in the coming days the Mujahideen will intensify their attacks and Kashmir will be liberated”.
