Delhi in Winters (X)
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating that smog and moderate fog will envelop much of the national capital, with predictions of dense fog in certain areas during the morning hours. A partly cloudy sky is also expected on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, thick fog descended upon Delhi, leading to significant flight delays at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The weather conditions are expected to shift later in the day, with wind speeds projected to increase to 8-10 km/h from the southeast in the afternoon. However, these speeds may drop below 6 km/h by evening and night.
The situation worsened on Saturday when visibility in Delhi fell to zero for an unprecedented nine hours, marking the longest duration of such conditions this season. This led to substantial disruptions at Delhi Airport, including 19 flight diversions, numerous cancellations, and over 400 flight delays for the second consecutive day.
The regional meteorological center in New Delhi has outlined the weather forecast for Sunday: “Smog/moderate fog at most places with dense fog at a few places is likely in the morning. Partly cloudy sky. Smog/shallow fog is likely in the evening/night. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 18°C and 10°C, respectively.”
The dense fog has severely impacted transportation, with officials reporting that 81 trains were delayed on Saturday. Looking ahead, a fresh Western Disturbance is anticipated to affect Northwest India between January 10 and 12, bringing light rainfall to the region on January 10.
The IMD forecasts widespread light to moderate rainfall over regions such as Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh until January 6. Isolated heavy rainfall and snowfall are expected in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on January 5, as well as in Himachal Pradesh on January 5 and 6. Additionally, isolated thunderstorms are predicted for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and northwest Uttar Pradesh.
In Jammu & Kashmir, a dense layer of fog has settled over parts of the region as it braces for widespread snowfall. An orange alert has been issued for Sunday, forecasting heavy snow at isolated locations. Officials have cautioned about potential disruptions to surface and air transportation.
With adverse weather conditions predicted to persist, authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during this period to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
