New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for a significant organisational reshuffle in Uttar Pradesh following its poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, as reported by media outlets. State BJP Chief Bhupendra Chaudhary has taken responsibility for the party's electoral setbacks and has offered to resign. He conveyed his decision during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also joined the discussions at the Prime Minister’s residence to determine the next course of action.

Strategic discussions in Delhi

Top BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh have been stationed in Delhi over the past few days, engaging in strategic discussions with the party’s central leadership. On July 16, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya met with BJP National President JP Nadda, sparking speculation about the impending reshuffle. Sources indicate that the Prime Minister discussed critical organisational matters with Chaudhary during their meeting.

BJP to focus on OBC leadership?

The BJP is reportedly considering appointing an OBC leader as the new state chief to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 polls. Chaudhary, a Jat leader from Moradabad, was appointed in 2022 to address the discontent within his community. However, given the significant proportion of OBCs in the state’s population, the party believes that an OBC leader could play a crucial role in future election results.

Electoral setbacks and future plans

The BJP suffered a major loss in Uttar Pradesh in the recent Lok Sabha elections, with its seat count dropping from 62 in 2019 to 33. The Samajwadi Party managed to win several seats that were previously BJP strongholds. Despite securing victories in the last two state elections, the BJP aims to ensure a third consecutive win by implementing extensive changes within its organisational structure.

Organisational revamp in Uttar Pradesh imminent?

Speculation about the organisational revamp intensified following remarks by Deputy Chief Minister Maurya, which were perceived as indirect criticism of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. During a party meeting on Sunday, Maurya stated, “The organisation is bigger than the government. No one is bigger than the organisation.” These comments fueled rumors of internal rifts and an impending overhaul.

Reviewing the causes of poor performance

In his meeting with the Prime Minister, Chaudhary outlined the reasons behind the BJP’s lackluster performance in Uttar Pradesh. According to sources, he attributed the losses to internal discontent among party workers and administrative issues. The review report also highlighted instances of officials allegedly aiding the opposition and the removal of BJP voters from electoral lists.
