People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said that all the opposition parties have united in their bid to save India’s democracy and Constitution, along with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mehbooba Mufti, who left for the Delhi airport after concluding the grand opposition meeting in Bengaluru on Tuesday, said, “All opposition parties have united and we want to save India’s democracy, the Constitution and save [Mahatma] Gandhiji’s Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb for which he sacrificed his life.”

The phrase ‘Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb’ (Ganga-Yamuna Culture) refers to the composite culture of Indian society, where people of multiple faiths co-exist and intermingle in harmony.

‘Attempts being made to change Gandhi’s India’: Mehbooba Mufti on BJP

Mehbooba Mufti, whose PDP party is a part of the opposition alliance termed ‘INDIA’, hit out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for supposedly trying to subvert the Constitution and democracy of the country.

“What is happening in the country is not right. Attempts are being made to subvert our constitution, democracy, and people’s rights, to change Gandhi’s India,” Mufti told news agency ANI. “Inflation and unemployment are at their peak but no one is bothered about it. On the other hand, attempts are being made to make people fight with one another.”

Speaking earlier to reporters after the conclusion of the opposition meeting, Mufti said, “Today our country’s Constitution and democracy are being played with. Diversity, which is the strength of this country, is being destroyed. That’s why we [opposition] all have united to save the ‘Idea of India’.”
