At the behest of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Delhi Police has intensified its drive against illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the city. The drive follows Shah emphasizing the issue as a national security concern in a high-level meeting on February 28, 2025.

On 6 March 2025, Delhi Police launched a verification drive in Sangam Vihar and nearby localities to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Police officials checked identity cards, residence certificates, and other documents of residents of the locality. The police also inquired about the place of origin of people and verified their documents to check if they were according to law.

Arrest of two illegal Bangladeshi nationals

In another raid, Delhi Police detained two Bangladeshi nationals in Punjabi Bagh locality of West Delhi for remaining beyond their visas. Sajal Miyan and Mohammad Ali were detained after the local police received clandestine tips about their unlawful stay. One of them has already been deported after adhering to proper procedure, and the other has been sent to a detention facility, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer.

Government's firm approach towards illegal immigration

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has again stated that illegal immigration is a national security issue. During the February meeting, he ordered law enforcement agencies to act sternly against illegal immigrants in Delhi and the surrounding regions. Shah stated, "The issue of Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltration is a national security issue and will be dealt with strongly."

Preparedness for action

Delhi Police officials said that they were equipped to handle such situations. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also had hopes from India's prison system, drawing reference to past experience of high-profile arrestees like Ajmal Kasab.
