Onion prices spoil people's budget

The skyrocketing onion prices after the middle of the month of October have already brought tears to the eyes of the people. Onions, which reached Rs 50 to Rs 55 per kg in wholesale and Rs 70 per kg in retail, have become not only affordable but also out of the reach of the middle class. On top of that, the onion prices during the festive season have disturbed people's budget.

Meanwhile, the Central Government on Saturday notified the Minimum Export Price (MEP) of USD 800 per Metric Ton (MT) on a FOB basis for the export of onions with effect from October 29 to December 31, 2023.
