West Bengal News: A special city court has convicted Sanjay Roy, the sole accused, of the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The Additional District Judge at Sealdah Court delivered the verdict on Saturday, finding Roy guilty under sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The court is set to announce the sentence on Monday. Despite the ruling, Roy maintained his innocence during the proceedings, claiming he was "falsely implicated" in the crime.
In a dramatic courtroom scene, Roy asserted his innocence, stating, "I have been falsely implicated. I have not done this. Those who have done so are being let go," hinting at possible involvement from law enforcement. The judge acknowledged Roy's right to address the court on the upcoming sentencing day.This judgment follows an in-camera trial that began two months prior and comes 162 days after the brutal crime occurred on August 9, 2024. The victim's parents expressed their gratitude towards the judiciary for delivering justice, emphasizing that their faith in the legal system had been upheld.
Sanjay Roy, who served as a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was apprehended shortly after the victim's body was discovered. Investigators identified him as a suspect through CCTV footage from the vicinity. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed that he was the only individual charged in this case.Before the verdict was announced, a sizable crowd gathered outside the courthouse. A senior advocate present remarked that this day marked a "watershed moment" in the pursuit of justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
