On 78th Independence Day, CRPF honored with most Gallantry medals, featuring 5 Shaurya Chakras

In a significant tribute to bravery and dedication, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been awarded the highest number of police gallantry medals this year, totaling 57. The Union Home Ministry announced these prestigious accolades on the eve of the 78th Independence Day, highlighting the CRPF’s exceptional service and sacrifice. This year’s honours include five Shaurya Chakras, one of India's highest peacetime awards for valour, recognising extraordinary courage in challenging situations.

Awards Across Operational Fronts

A senior CRPF officer detailed that the awards celebrate exceptional actions across two key operational areas. Of the 57 medals, 25 were awarded for courageous actions during operations in Jammu and Kashmir, a region fraught with ongoing security issues. The remaining 32 medals were given for distinguished service in anti-Maoist operations throughout various states affected by Wing Extremism. The CRPF's role in these operations has been crucial in combating insurgency and upholding peace.

Notable Recipients of the Shaurya Chakra

The Shaurya Chakra awards, which acknowledge acts of exceptional bravery, were presented to:

  1. Constable Pawan Kumar (posthumous)
  2. Constable Devan C (posthumous)
  3. Deputy Commandant Lakhveer
  4. Assistant Commandant Rajesh Panchal
  5. Constable Malkit Singh

Among other distinguished recipients, Sub-Inspector Raushan Kumar was honored posthumously for his valor against Maoists in Bihar in February 2019. Additionally, Assistant Commandant Teja Ram Choudhary received two gallantry medals for his brave operations against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

In total, President Droupadi Murmu has approved 103 gallantry awards for Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces personnel, which includes four Kirti Chakras, 18 Shaurya Chakras, and various other honours.
