Among the prominent names is former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from two key constituencies – Ganderbal and Budgam. Abdullah's participation is seen as pivotal in the overall political landscape of the region.

Also in the spotlight is Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina, who is vying for the Nowshera assembly seat. Raina, a significant figure within the BJP, aims to strengthen his party's presence in the region. Additionally, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president, Tariq Hamid Karra, is contesting from the Central Shalteng seat, adding further intensity to the electoral battle.

Key contenders in Jammu and Kashmir politics

Omar Abdullah (National Conference)

Omar Abdullah, the vice-president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) and a former Chief Minister, remains one of the most influential political figures in the region. Representing a strong legacy as the son of veteran leader Farooq Abdullah and the grandson of Sheikh Abdullah, Omar has been a central figure in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir for over two decades.
Omar Abdullah is contesting from two key constituencies—Ganderbal and Budgam—in the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir elections, marking another crucial chapter in his political journey. Known for his pragmatic approach to governance and his strong advocacy for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, Omar has been a vocal critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its policies in the region, especially after the abrogation of Article 370.

Having served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2015, Omar Abdullah’s leadership style is often seen as progressive, focusing on issues like youth empowerment, education, and infrastructure development. However, he has also faced significant challenges, particularly in navigating the complex dynamics of Jammu and Kashmir’s political environment, marked by tensions between regional and national interests.

Ravinder Raina (BJP)

Ravinder Raina, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jammu and Kashmir, is a prominent political figure in the region, known for his strong leadership and nationalist stance. Contesting from the Nowshera assembly seat in the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir elections, Raina is a crucial candidate for the BJP, which is aiming to expand its influence across the Union Territory.

A vocal advocate for the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with mainstream India, Raina has played a significant role in strengthening the BJP’s foothold in the region, especially after the abrogation of Article 370. His candidacy from Nowshera reflects his growing stature within the party and his appeal among the electorate in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tariq Hamid Karra (JKPCC)

Tariq Hamid Karra, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), is a significant figure in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. With a deep-rooted political background, Karra has been an influential voice for the Congress party in a region that has witnessed complex and often tumultuous political dynamics.

Currently contesting from the Central Shalteng constituency in the ongoing elections, Karra’s candidacy is pivotal as he seeks to revitalize the Congress party’s presence in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the face of strong competition from regional parties like the National Conference and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His experience in the political arena, including previous roles as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and as a minister in the Jammu and Kashmir government, has equipped him with a deep understanding of the region's unique challenges.
