PM Narendra Modi will be visiting Odisha on Saturday, confirmed PMO sources. He will be meeting officials after visiting the crash site and seeing injured travellers in the Cuttack hospital.

PM Modi was earlier scheduled to flag off Goa’s first Vande Bharat Express today. However, after this triple train accident, the event has been called off.

Modi will also be holding a high-level meeting with senior railway officials to gain stock of the situation in Odisha.

How the accident happened?

As per the railway sources, the Coromandel express train, running at a speed of 127km/hour was on track in Odisha’s Balasore district when it collided with the goods train parked on the same track. The Coromandel express train after colliding, got derailed on the main line. After the collision, Howrah bound Yashwantnagar Express coming from the opposite side collided with the Coromandel Express.  As per a railway official, this could be a human error as it appears that the locomotive pilot took the loop line where the goods train was parked.

A similar kind of event had happened in 1995 in Firozabad on Uttar Pradesh where three trains collided because of a human error. As many as 350 travellers were killed in that accident.
