Update (06:03PM) – Modi is in Odisha taking a stock into the Balasore triple train tragedy. Speaking with DD News, he, with a heavy throat, stated, “It’s a painful incident. Govt will leave no stone unturned for the treatment of those injured. It’s a serious incident, instructions issued for probe from every angle. Those found guilty will be punished stringently. Railway is working towards track restoration. I met the injured victims.”

PM Modi also applauded the contribution by state’s officials, the NDRF and the youth of nearby areas who were continuously making efforts to help the police and railways authorities.

More than 900 people have been injured and more than 290 people have been declared dead in the unfortunate Balasore’s triple-train accident that took place on Friday evening.

As per sources present there on the crash site, PM Modi has already arrived in Balasore to take a stock of the situation.

PM Modi also convened a high-level meeting with political honchos and railways officials on Saturday morning.

According to the sources, the derailment of 10 to 12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express after colliding with a static goods train caused them to fall onto the opposite track. Subsequently, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express rammed with the derailed coaches, leading to the derailment of three to four of its own coaches.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that he has ordered a high-level probe into the derailment. “The accident was unfortunate, and the rescue operation began shortly after the incident was reported to his ministry,” the minister said, as quoted by ANI. The railway ministry has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs. 2 lakh to those severely injured, and Rs. 50,000 to those who sustained with minor injuries.
