New Delhi: BJP-led government in Odisha has announced a new policy offering 10% reservation and a five-year age relaxation for Agniveers in the state's uniformed services. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced it after his participation in a NITI Aayog council meeting in Delhi on Friday.

Chief Minister Majhi shared the news at a press conference in the national capital. "Our soldiers are our pride. Agniveers, who undergo rigorous training with our defense forces, are well-equipped to serve the nation in various security-related roles," Majhi stated. He emphasized that the Odisha government’s new policy aims to integrate these trained individuals into the state’s security apparatus.

The Chief Minister praised the Agniveer scheme, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as a historic initiative. According to Majhi, this scheme empowers the youth by equipping them to face life's challenges bravely. By offering a quota and age relaxation, Odisha aims to utilize the skills and training of Agniveers effectively.

Similar announcements by other states

Odisha's decision follows similar moves by other BJP-ruled states, including Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. These states have also announced quotas and age relaxations for Agniveers in their respective uniformed services. The central government launched the Agnipath recruitment scheme in 2022, intending to refresh the age profile of the armed forces and create a more dynamic and capable military force.

What is Agnipath scheme?

The Agnipath scheme recruits young individuals, aged between 17-and-a-half and 21 years, for a four-year service period. After this period, 25% of the Agniveers are retained for an additional 15 years, while the remaining 75% are released. This scheme aims to bring a youthful and energetic workforce into the military services, preparing them for future challenges.

Opposition's concerns

Despite the government’s support for the scheme, it has faced criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Congress. Critics question the future of the 75% of Agniveers who will be released after their initial four-year tenure, raising concerns about their career prospects and integration into civilian life.
