In the latest move, the Karnataka forest department has announced an insurance cover to the tourists visiting the Bandipur and Nagarahole tiger reserves. According to the information, the decision has been taken against any risk towards incidents.
According to the sources, A sum of Rs 5 lakh will be given for death and permanent total disablement and Rs 2.5 lakh in case of partial disability. The forest authorities have taken a public liability non-industrial policy insurance cover with a sum assured of Rs 1 crore.
At Bandipur, the policy got enacted on September 23 at a premium of Rs 80,000 to the United India Insurance Company Ltd. Whereas, at Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, the policy came into effect on October 4, with the premim of Rs 70,000 to the same insurance company.
The decision for providing this unique aid was announced on June 21 by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife) Kumar Pushkar, who instructed the field officers of the forest department to provide insurance cover to visitors at eco-tourism sites in protected areas across Karnataka.
The move has been initiated after wildlife conservationist Giridhar Kulkarni submitted a proposal to the forest department in January. And in May, he again wrote to the department concerned for the insurance cover for the visitors.
