Monsoon fury in North India

Since Monsoon arrived, it has not only given relief from the severe heat waves but also has shown its fury in many parts of the country. As heavy downpours lashed the states, it disrupted normal life, causing multiple deaths, waterlogging, traffic congestions, building collapses, swept cars away and washed away bridges.

On Sunday, India received 81 per cent above-normal rainfall while the national capital recorded the highest rainfall in four decades (40 years).

As per the IMD report on Sunday, Himachal Pradesh received 104 mm rainfall, which was almost 13 times above normal. The single-day rainfall in Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir was around nine times above normal, while that in Punjab was over 12 times above normal.

Here is the weather prediction for Monday by the IMD:

  • Northwest India: It is expected to experience light to moderate widespread rainfall with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Western Himalayan Region, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Uttar Pradesh may experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely from July 10-12.
  • West India: Anticipate light to moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall to continue over Konkan and Goa, as well as the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat state for the next 3 days, followed by a decrease in rainfall.
  • East & Northeast India: Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur over the next 5 days. Andaman & Nicobar Islands may have isolated heavy rainfall from Monday, and Bihar may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 11-13.
