On Tuesday night, the father of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, expressed deep frustration with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's handling of the case. The tragic incident has sparked nationwide protests and widespread outrage.

In a tearful statement, the victim’s father criticised the state government, specifically targeting the Chief Minister for her perceived lack of action. “We are not satisfied with the role of the CM (Mamata Banerjee) in this case. She did not take any substantial action,” he declared. He further lamented, “We have always believed that someone from the department was involved. If anyone celebrates Durga Puja this year, it will be without joy, as everyone in Bengal and beyond considers my daughter their own.”

Dispute Over Compensation

The controversy intensified after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed no financial compensation had been offered to the victim’s family. In response, the mother of the deceased doctor accused Banerjee of dishonesty. “The Chief Minister claimed we would receive compensation and could create a memorial for our daughter,” she said. “But I stated that we would accept no compensation until we received justice.”

The mother also accused Banerjee of attempting to stifle the protests. “We will continue to protest until justice is served,” she warned.

Supreme Court Intervention

On Monday, the Supreme Court intervened, instructing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to provide a fresh status report on the case. The court also requested clarification on the timing of the unnatural death report and urged protesting doctors to return to work. In a related development, Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy in connection with the crime.

Denials and Allegations

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee denied the bribery allegations, calling them baseless slander. “I have never offered money to the deceased doctor's family. This is simply slander,” Banerjee asserted. She also stated that the government was supportive if the family wished to create a memorial for their daughter.

Earlier, the victim’s parents alleged that the police attempted to bribe them to suppress the case and hurriedly cremated their daughter’s body. “The police tried to hush up the case from the start. We were not allowed to view the body, and when it was eventually handed over, a senior officer offered us money, which we refused,” the father said. The doctor’s aunt condemned the police's actions, questioning their humanity.
