Allowing the Tiger safari only in the peripheral and buffer zones of the Jim Corbett National Park, the Supreme Court on Wednesday banned it beyond the protected areas for wildlife conservation. In it's judgment, the top court said that it was clear that the national wildlife conservation plan recognizes the need of the hour.
According to the order, the tiger safari would now be allowed only in peripheral and buffer zones of the Jim Corbett National Park.
The court in its statement said, “They have thrown the public trust doctrine in the wastebin.”
The court also slammed former Uttarakhand Forest Minister Harak Singh Rawat and divisional forest officer Kishan Chand for illegal construction and felling of trees at the Corbett Tiger Reserve. The apex court said that the nexus of politicians and forest officials has resulted in heavy damage to the environment. Apart from this, the court has asked them to submit a status report within three months.
