The Assam government has introduced a new dress code for the teachers of the higher educational institutes operating in the state.

Assam announces new dress code for teachers

A notification signed by a senior state official has announced that the teachers will no longer be allowed to attend duties in casual dress. Only formal or traditional dress will be allowed to wear during their office hours.

The notification read, “It has come to the notice of the undersigned that some teachers of the Higher Education Department are found in the habit of wearing the dress of their choice which does not appear to be acceptable by the public at large.”

“Since a teacher is expected to be an example of all sorts of decency, especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism and seriousness of purpose at the workplace,” it added.

Here are some key points to remember:

  • For the male teachers, they are only allowed to attend their duties in appropriate formal attire, such as formal shirts, trousers, dhoti etc., and not in casual attire like a polo t-shirt, or jeans.
  • Now, female teachers should attend in traditional attire like a suit, saree etc., but strictly not allowed in leggings, jeans or t-shirts.
  • Both male and female teachers must be dressed in clean, modest and decent clothes in sober colours, which should not look fashionable or flashy. They were asked to avoid casual and party apparel.

This latest decision comes months after the state government announced a dress code for teachers in all the state-run schools and prohibited wearing t-shirts, jeans and leggings while on duty.
