New Delhi: As protests intensify across West Bengal following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya—the victim of the infamous 2012 Delhi gang rape—has called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Asha Devi criticized Banerjee for failing to address the situation effectively, accusing her of diverting attention rather than taking decisive action against the perpetrators.Asha Devis strong criticismSpeaking to PTI, Asha Devi expressed her disappointment in the chief ministers handling of the incident. Instead of using her power to act against the culprits, Mamata Banerjee is trying to mislead the public by holding protests. As a woman and the head of the state, she should have taken strict action. Her failure to do so warrants her resignation, Asha Devi asserted.Tragic incident at R G Kar Medical CollegeThe 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The horrific incident has sparked outrage among students, medical professionals, and citizens nationwide, leading to widespread protests demanding justice.Mamata Banerjees response under fireMamata Banerjee, who led a protest rally in Kolkata from Moulali to Dorina Crossing on Friday, has also demanded justice for the victim, calling for the culprits to be hanged. However, her participation in the protest has been met with criticism from Asha Devi and others who believe that as the states leader, Banerjee should have focused on immediate and decisive actions rather than symbolic protests.Asha Devis warning on womens safetyAsha Devi also raised concerns about the broader implications of the incident, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by women across the country. When girls are not safe even in Kolkatas medical colleges, it reflects the dire state of womens safety nationwide. Until both central and state governments prioritize swift punishment for rapists, such atrocities will continue, she warned.Following the alleged rape and murder, the West Bengal Police arrested one suspect. However, citing lapses in the police investigation, the Calcutta High Court has since transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further inquiry.
