A fresh case of deadliest Nipah virus was confirmed in India’s Kerala on Friday, taking the total number of infections to six while death toll remains two. According to the information, the state has been in spate of Nipah cases which damages the brain with a virus and spreads through contact with the body fluids of infected bats, pigs or people. Nipah virus was first detected in 2018 in Kerala’s Kozhikode.

Keeping the situation in mind, the state government is in a high alert mode and testing all those who were in contact with the infected people. According to the official data, so far, the Kerala Health department has identified a total of 1,080 persons who were in the contact of the positive patients. The department has initiated testing the samples.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced Friday that it would procure at least 20 more doses of monoclonal antibody for its treatment from Australia.

School, colleges to remain shut till September 24

In the wake of the Nipah virus infection, all educational institutes in Kerala’s Kozhikode will remain shut for a week until next Sunday, September 24. This includes schools, professional colleges, and tuition centres.

Meanwhile, the state administration has asked to ensure that online classes will be conducted throughout the week.

In addition to this, the state administration has also asked the people to avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas of Kerala and Karnataka and adhere to all necessary precautions that they were taking during Covid-19 outbreak.

The notification issued by the heath department says:

“In view of Nipah cases in Kerala, Karnataka Govt issued a circular and has advised the general public to avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas of Kerala; intensify surveillance in the bordering districts to Kerala ( Kodagu, Dakshin Kannada, Chamrajanagara & Mysore) and at the points of entries to Karnataka.”
