A SpiceJet passenger flying from Mumbai to Bengaluru endured an alarming mid-air emergency on Tuesday when he became stuck in the airplane lavatory for over an hour.
The male passenger entered the bathroom shortly after takeoff. However, a malfunction with the lavatory door lock left him trapped inside for the entire flight duration.
SpiceJet acknowledged the disturbing incident in a statement, expressing regret and saying the man received assistance throughout the ordeal.
According to the airline, the crew provided the stranded passenger with guidance and passed him a note under the door advising him not to panic.
"Sir, we tried our best to open the door. However, we could not open it. Do not panic, we are landing in a few minutes. So please the commode lid sit on it and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, the engineer will come. Do not panic," the note reportedly read.
Upon landing in Bengaluru, technicians were finally able to open the jammed lavatory door and free the passenger. He promptly received a medical evaluation after the traumatic experience.
Aviation safety experts called it an extremely rare occurrence that highlights the importance of lavatory maintenance and crew training for such emergencies.
While awkward lavatory issues occasionally happen, getting fully trapped in a confined space for an entire flight is deeply concerning, they said. SpiceJet stated that the malfunctioning lock has been fixed to prevent any repeat episodes.
The airline apologized again for the distress caused to the passenger stuck in the bathroom for over 60 minutes mid-flight due to apparent mechanical issues.
