As India prepares to ring in the new year, metropolises across the country are implementing robust security measures to prevent unrest and ensure safe celebrations. Police presence has intensified in major cities, traffic advisories issued, and stern warnings given against consuming drugs and drunk driving.
In the capital New Delhi, over 10,000 police personnel and 2,500 traffic officers will be deployed, while prohibitory orders are in effect for Noida and Greater Noida. Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad also have comprehensive plans encompassing policing, traffic control and crackdowns on illegal activities.
Gearing up for New Year's Eve festivities, Delhi Police has heightened security arrangements across the capital. More than 10,000 officers will be on the streets Sunday to maintain law and order.
Police will work in two shifts, with Station House Officers ordered to be on patrol duty to keep the peace on the 31st. The first shift runs from 5 pm to midnight, and the second from midnight to 6 am.
Additionally, around 2,500 Delhi Traffic Police personnel will be stationed to ensure smooth traffic flow. Some 250 teams will watch for drunk driving, which under amended motor vehicle laws draws a Rs 10,000 fine and a potential three-month license suspension.
Special Commissioner S S Yadav said vehicles headed to Connaught Place will face regulation after 8 pm on New Year's Eve. He stated over 500 vulnerable points have been identified to prevent hooliganism and violations, with special teams posted at major intersections and hotspots.
Deputy Commissioner Joy Tirkey warned that performing stunts or overloading vehicles will bring strict action, including immediate impounding of motorcycles.
The Delhi Fire Service has also prepared for emergencies at crowded sites like Lajpat Nagar, Connaught Place and Ansal Plaza by strategically placing 10-15 water tankers. Chief Atul Garg said this will ensure safety amid high foot traffic.
In adjoining Noida and Greater Noida, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be imposed on December 31 and January 1. This prohibits assemblies of five or more people in public areas.
Unauthorized processions, public prayers and alcohol use in public are also banned over the two days. Noida Police said various groups have planned events like protests, and anti-social elements could disturb the peace. Violators face punishment.
Gurugram Police released a traffic advisory for people visiting markets and malls on New Year's Eve. Ten designated parking areas have been set up to prevent jams.
Police teams will be stationed across the city to catch drunk drivers.
Mumbai Police will deploy over 2,000 officers and 11,500 staff across the city on Saturday to avert any untoward New Year's Eve incidents. The force will establish blockades and increase patrols in crowded zones.
Stern action is promised against offences like drunk driving, public disturbance, women harassment, illicit liquor and drug use/peddling.
Chennai has also deployed around 18,000 personnel, including senior officials, to enable peaceful celebrations. Added safety measures include a public prohibition on entering the sea from Sunday evening through Monday. Bursting firecrackers are completely banned in all areas.
Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore instructed officials to implement comprehensive security for incident-free festivities, per reports.
Telangana's Director General of Police Ravi Gupta said stringent action will be pursued against drug use and trafficking not just on New Year's but year-round. Special test kits will check for intoxication, following surprise visits to pubs and other venues.
Thirty-three sniffer dogs trained to detect drugs will aid surprise inspections, Gupta added.
He advised against creating a public nuisance or drunk driving, noting surprise road checks are planned. The police chief said following safety guidelines will enable peaceful celebrations across the state.
