Stalin vs. Center: Tamil Nadu Rejects NEP, Alleges Government Blackmail

The rift between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the central government deepened on March 11, 2025, as Stalin outright rejected the National Education Policy (NEP), accusing the Center of resorting to blackmail to enforce its implementation. In a fiery stand against what he calls an imposition on state autonomy, Stalin’s administration has drawn a line in the sand, escalating tensions in an already contentious debate over education reforms in India.

NEP Row: The conflict between the central government and the Tamil Nadu government is increasing over the National Education Policy and its three-language formula. The round of allegations and counter-allegations on NEP is being seen from Parliament to the streets. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has completely come out against it. He does not like this policy of the Center. Stalin on Tuesday rejected the NEP and criticized the statement given by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Parliament.

Addressing a program in Chengalpattu, Stalin said that the central government is putting pressure to implement NEP and three-language formula in the state. 

Accused the central government of blackmailing
On this occasion, he criticized the statement made by Education Minister Pradhan in Parliament. According to Stalin, Pradhan said that he will release Rs 2000 crore to Tamil Nadu only after the three-language formula including Hindi and Sanskrit is implemented. The CM described this statement of Pradhan as 'blackmailing'. Stalin alleged that the central government is imposing its policy in the name of NEP. Its intention is to destroy the education system of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin rejects NEP, accuses Centre of Coercion

The Tamil Nadu CM posted on X. In this post, while responding to the Union Minister, he wrote, 'You just tell whether you can release the funds that were collected from us and which are meant for the students of Tamil Nadu.' The Chief Minister said that the DMK government works respecting the views of the people, while the BJP leaders are bound by 'orders from Nagpur'. He criticized Pradhan for using a particular word to target DMK MPs and said that the Union Minister has betrayed Tamil Nadu by not releasing the funds.
