Amid a verbal spat between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition regarding the change of name from Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) to Prime Ministers Museum and Library, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy is defined by his actions.

“Nehru’s identity is through his work, not just his name,” Gandhi told the news agency ANI on Thursday.

The name alteration took effect on Tuesday, prompting a swift reaction. The Opposition, led by Congress, criticised the move as ‘petty’ politics aimed at diminishing Nehru’s legacy. In contrast, the BJP defended the government’s decision, asserting it bestows ‘respect’ on all former Prime Ministers.

“Mr. Modi possesses a huge bundle of fears, complexes and insecurities, especially when it comes to our first and longest serving Prime Minister. He has had a single point agenda of denying, distorting, defaming and destroying Nehru and the Nehruvian legacy. He has erased N and put P instead. That P is really for pettiness and peeve.,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote on his X handle.

Modi gave respect to all PMs, not just Nehru: BJP leader Ravi Shankar

Responding to the criticism, former Union minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad countered, “There is a basic difference between the thinking of the Congress and PM Narendra Modi. They [Congress] think [of] only Nehru-ji and family matters. Modi-ji gave a respectful position to all Indian PMs at the museum.”

The decision to drop Nehru’s name from the renaming of the library was made during a special meeting of the NMML Society on June 15.

The NMML Society is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprises 29 members, including Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, G Kishan Reddy, Anurag Thakur, among others.
