Amid ongoing paper leak controversy, the counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Under Graduate) or NEET UG has been deferred till further notice. However, the new dates are yet to be announced.

The NTA, which conducts several entrance exams and other courses and the Union Education Ministry have been into headlines over alleged irregularities over paper leak that was held on May 5. The exam results were earlier expected to be declared on June 14, but were declared on June 4 as the answer sheet checking was already completed.

The shocking development in the history came into light after 67 students scored 720 marks, of which 6 were from a single exam centre in Faridabad, Haryana. This led to suspicion of irregularities in the results. At least 1,563 candidates who were given grace marks in NEET-UG were asked to take the exam again. However, 750 of them opted out if it.

Investigation underway

The investigation into the paper leak has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has so far arrested 6 people including the main conspirator Aman Singh. On Friday, the central government filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing the re-conduct of the medical entrance exam NEET-UG 2024, arguing that such a move would disrupt the academic calendar and was not necessary due to lack of evidence of malpractice.

Supporting the Center, the National Examination Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET, also filed a separate petition in the Supreme Court on the same day. The NTA petition said that canceling the exam would not be right and would jeopardize the career prospects of meritorious students. Even though the investigation into the case of malpractice is ongoing and action is being taken.
