“There are several laws in the country that address the issue of women's safety. In 2019, the fast-track courts law was passed, under which witness deposition centers were created. District monitoring committees play an important role. We must ensure these committees are further strengthened and that faster verdicts are delivered in cases involving women's safety,” Modi stated. The Prime Minister's comments were made just a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged him to implement stricter central legislation and harsher punishments for heinous crimes such as rape and murder. Banerjee expressed her frustration, noting that previous appeals to the central government had gone unanswered.
Responding to Banerjee’s concerns, the central government insisted that existing laws are robust enough to tackle such crimes and urged state governments to enforce them rigorously. Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, stressed that adherence to these laws would significantly bolster the criminal justice system and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable. PM Modi also pointed out that several initiatives have been introduced over the past decade to reduce delays in the justice system and improve judicial infrastructure, underscoring the importance of a more active approach to safeguarding women.
