The Education Minister for the Union, Dharmendra Pradhan, said on Friday that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been given deemed university status.

The official statement

On the 63rd anniversary of NCERT’s founding, Pradhan made the announcement in the nation’s capital.

“NCERT has been granted the status of a deemed University today,” he announced.

NCERT petitioned the University Grants Commission (UGC) in September of last year with a request for “Deemed University” status.

In accordance with UGC regulations, those institutes that specialised in novel and developing fields of knowledge were given presumed university status.

What does this mean?

With the “Deemed University” designation, NCERT will be able to grant its own graduation, post-graduate, and doctoral degrees and exercise autonomy in areas such as programme introduction, course design, holding examinations, and management, among others.

At its Regional Institute of Education (REI) centers, which are connected to nearby universities, NCERT now offers graduate and postgraduate degrees for training teachers.

Currently, REIs can only establish new courses with the agreement of the institutions with which they are associated.
