Maharashtra: A volatile situation was witnessed in Nagpur, Maharashtra, as a huge crowd congregated near the Ganeshpeth police station, purportedly at the behest of Faheem Shamim Khan, the city president of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP). Khan has been accused of mobilizing 50 to 60 people who illegally gathered and sought to cause disturbance.
The violence was a result of a demonstration organized by members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal at Gandhi Gate in front of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue. During the demonstration, protesters symbolically burnt an effigy of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, showing their rejection of his legacy. This act apparently irked members of Khan's group, prompting a counter-mobilization.
After the VHP and Bajrang Dal rally, Khan's organization filed a complaint, leading to an FIR (No. 114/25) against nine people. The case was filed under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code and under several sections of the Bombay Police Act. The police tried to keep the situation under control, but by 4 p.m., a group of about 400 to 500 people had congregated at the Chhatrapati Shivaji statue, reportedly with a view to causing violence.
The authorities repeatedly announced that the crowd should disperse and reminded them that their gathering was illegal. Nevertheless, the mob was said to be armed with sticks, stones, axes, and other weapons, which heightened tension. Things took a turn for the worst when they tried storming the police station, in which a female police officer was allegedly molested by the pandemonium.
As per the FIR, the mob used the darkness of the evening to further escalate their acts of violence. The police are now probing the case further, and legal action is being taken against the culprits. The incident has caused serious doubts regarding law and order in Nagpur, with officials issuing a warning against any attempts to create communal tensions in the future.
