New Delhi: The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced on Monday, marked by the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected members, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Bhartruhari Mahtab of the BJP, who was appointed as the protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The session includes the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26, followed by President Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses on June 27. The session will conclude on July 3.

Opposition's criticism

During the session, the Opposition alliance INDIA bloc raised multiple issues against the NDA government. Their concerns included rising prices, food inflation, deaths due to an unprecedented heatwave, and recent irregularities in exam administration, including NEET UG, NEET PG, and UGC NET. These exam-related problems have caused unrest among students and questioned the effectiveness of the institutions responsible for conducting these exams.

Lok Sabha election results

This session follows the general elections where the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats. The INDIA bloc obtained 234 seats, while the Congress party held 99 of those seats.

Praniti Shinde (Congress MP): Felt emotional climbing the stairs of the new Parliament House, longing for the old one due to its historical significance. She is eager to address challenges like inflation, unemployment, and threats to democracy.

Priya Saroj (Samajwadi Party MP): Expressed happiness about the youth’s participation in politics, believing it will accelerate the country’s development.
