New Delhi: In a recent statement, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, representing the BJP, asserted that the video depicting the sexual assault of Kuki-Zo women was deliberately leaked to demean Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing attendees at a Yuva Sammelan in Imphal, CM Biren Singh condemned the circulation of the video on social media platforms, alleging that it was strategically released to coincide with the commencement of the parliamentary session. He emphasized that the intention behind the video's dissemination was to tarnish the image of the BJP government by presenting a distorted narrative of events. Singh further reiterated the government's efforts to address the violence that erupted in Manipur since May 3, emphasizing Home Minister Amit Shah's personal intervention in the matter.
Additionally, CM Biren Singh provided clarification regarding the incident, stating that the two women were rescued by members of the Meitei community following the assault. However, he criticized the selective portrayal of events by certain individuals with the aim of defaming the BJP-led administration.
Following the circulation of the video, Manipur police apprehended six suspects in connection with the case. Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed jurisdiction over the investigation in July 2023 and filed a chargesheet in October of the same year. The chargesheet encompassed various offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, including gangrape, rioting, murder, abduction, and criminal conspiracy.
Manipur has been grappling with recurring episodes of ethnic violence involving the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023. The clashes have resulted in the loss of 219 lives and the displacement of approximately 60,000 individuals, highlighting the urgent need for sustained efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in the region.
