Seven suspected deaths linked to GBS

Health officials have confirmed seven fatalities linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome. According to medical experts, GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness in limbs, and respiratory issues.

Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome
GBS is a rare but potentially severe neurological condition that damages peripheral nerves, leading to weakness in the hands and feet. If left untreated or misdiagnosed, it can progress to a critical stage. However, doctors emphasize that timely diagnosis and appropriate medical intervention can lead to full recovery.

Symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome
The early symptoms of GBS often include tingling sensations and muscle weakness in the limbs. If untreated, it can lead to paralysis. Common symptoms include:

  • Tingling or numbness in hands, feet, ankles, or wrists
  • Muscle weakness in the legs
  • Difficulty walking or climbing stairs
  • Trouble speaking, chewing, or swallowing
  • Vision disturbances, including double vision
  • Sharp muscle pain
  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction
  • Breathing difficulties

With the rising number of GBS cases in Pune, health authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Early detection and timely treatment remain crucial in managing the condition and reducing fatalities.
