National News: There was an atmosphere of violence and unrest in the Jangipur area of Murshidabad district during the protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The protesters took to the streets and threw stones at the police, set fire to vehicles and vandalized, injuring many people. This incident became a major security challenge for the administration.
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Governor CV Anand Bose gave strict instructions to the state government. Internet services were suspended and Section 163 was implemented in the area. In addition, the Governor also approached Union Home Minister Amit Shah, as it was necessary to take special care of security due to being close to the international border of Murshidabad. The purpose of these steps was to control the situation and prevent violence from spreading.
Political response to this incident was also intensified. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh appealed to the protesters to maintain peace, so that the situation did not deteriorate. At the same time, opposition parties criticized the state government and demanded appropriate action. He alleged that the government did not take any effective steps to handle the situation in time, which increased the violence.
The incident occurred after the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which has been challenged by many opposition parties in the Supreme Court. The Act affects religious and communal sensations, which has increased tension in many areas. There have been incidents of communal violence in Murshidabad earlier, such as stone pelting on a procession during Ram Navami. Opposition to this new law has further increased these tensions.
The administration needs to be more cautious to avoid such incidents in sensitive places like Murshidabad. To prevent violence, it will be necessary to have community dialogue, strengthening law and order, and appeal for peace. Apart from this, political parties should also consider their responsibility and work towards a peaceful solution on this sensitive issue.
