Waqf Law protests turn Violent in West Bengal: Police firing injures one in Murshidabad

West Bengal: Violence broke out anew in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Saturday (April 12). A man was injured as he was struck by a bullet in Dhulian's Shamsherganj block. This follows widespread turmoil that broke out in Suti and Shamsherganj on Friday during Waqf (Amendment) Act protest marches. As per media sources, while speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, ADG (Law and Order) Javed Shamim stated that as per initial reports, the shooting might have been carried out by BSF and not local police. Currently, the injured individual has been admitted to the hospital and his condition is reportedly stable.

BSF deployed in border area, monitoring the situation

The BSF was deployed in sensitive areas of Murshidabad along the Bangladesh border after Friday's incidents. However, 118 people have been arrested so far in connection with the violence and according to officials, more arrests will continue.

Presence of senior officials, trying to bring the situation under control

At present, senior officers of the ADG and IG level are currently present in Murshidabad. Special forces have been deployed to bring the situation under control. Meanwhile, in another incident, a teenager, who was injured in police firing during clashes in Suti, is currently undergoing treatment in Kolkata.

DGP Rajiv Kumar's appeal: "Don't pay attention to rumours"

West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar said, "The unfortunate incident that took place this morning was probably due to some rumours. In such a situation, I appeal to the public not to fall into such provocation. It's a fight between good and evil. "We will deal very strictly with people who are propagating rumours. In the meanwhile, the DGP has appealed to the masses not to attempt to take the law and order into their hands. The DGP added that the police were fully equipped to safeguard the life and property of the people.".
