New Delhi: Violent protests erupted in West Bengal's Bhangad area as supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) clashed with police over the Waqf Act. The situation turned chaotic, with vehicles being set ablaze, prompting the police to use force to regain control. The activists involved in the rally started stone pelting protesting the blockade of the police. According to local sources, the protesters also set a police van on fire. A large number of police forces were deployed to control the situation, but remained a tense atmosphere.
The center of protest is the Waqf Act, which is angry with ISF and many Muslim organizations. They allege that this law violates the rights of property and the people of the community are being controlled without their consent. The issue has long been the cause of dissatisfaction among people in Bhangar and adjoining rural areas.
State politics has also been hot after the incident. Opposition parties have accused the Mamata Banerjee government that it is resorting to police persecution to suppress the voice of the public. Both BJP and Congress have demanded a fair investigation, calling this violence as administrative failure.
On the other hand, the police administration has appealed to the common citizens to maintain peace. Officials say that no one will be allowed to take the law in hand and strict action will be taken against those who spread violence.
Currently, security forces are deployed in many sensitive areas including Bhangar and internet services can also be temporary. No formal statement has come from the state government, but according to sources, efforts for peace talks have started. It is clear that the opposition to the Waqf Act is not taking the name of stopping and if the situation is not controlled soon, then this issue can be deepened.
