New Delhi: Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan has been named in a murder case linked to the ongoing political unrest in the country, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. The case was filed by Rafiqul Islam, whose son Rubel was fatally shot during a protest on August 7. Rubel was reportedly part of a rally on Ring Road in Adabor, Dhaka, where he sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Rubel succumbed to his injuries the same day.

High-profile accusations

The case, lodged at the Adabor police station, lists Shakib as the 28th accused. Alongside him, popular Bangladeshi actor Ferdous Ahmed has been named as the 55th accused. Both Shakib and Ferdous were previously Members of Parliament representing the Awami League, Bangladesh’s ruling party until recent political upheavals.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also been named in the case, alongside 154 others. The report suggests that between 400-500 unidentified individuals have also been accused in connection with the violence that led to Rubel's death.

Leadership changes at Bangladesh Cricket Board

In the wake of this turmoil, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former captain Faruque Ahmed as its new president, following the resignation of Nazmul Hassan, a close ally of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Nazmul, who has been at the helm of the BCB since 2012, resigned amid the ongoing political crisis. Faruque, who captained Bangladesh in the 1994 ICC Trophy and served as the national chief selector between 2005 and 2014, has now taken over the role.
