In a shocking incident in Mumbai’s Mankhurd, a toddler was reportedly murdered by her stepfather. The tragedy unfolded early Friday morning when the child’s mother returned from work to find her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter dead. The accused, identified as a tempo driver, has been arrested by Mankhurd Police and charged with murder.

The heartbreaking discovery

The victim's mother, who had remarried several months ago, works as a domestic help while her husband, a tempo driver, mostly works night shifts. According to police, the mother and stepfather frequently argued over his reluctance to care for her young daughter. On the day of the incident, the mother initially thought her daughter was sleeping, but upon closer inspection, discovered the child was lifeless.

Sensing something was wrong, the mother confronted her husband, who acted suspiciously, prompting her to call neighbours and the police.

Investigation and medical reports pending

While rumours of sexual assault surfaced, police sources have denied these claims for now. Mankhurd’s Senior Inspector, Madhu Ghorpade confirmed that there were no signs of rape or sexual assault, and the accused was not intoxicated during the incident. Investigators believe the stepfather’s frustration with caring for a child who was not his biological daughter may have been the motive behind the crime.

As of now, the accused remains in police custody for further investigation. Authorities are awaiting postmortem and medical reports to confirm the cause of death.
