New Delhi: A tragic hit-and-run incident in Mumbai’s Mulund area early on Saturday morning claimed the life of one worker and left another critically injured. The victims, Pritam Thorat and Prasad Patil were employees of the famous Cha Raja Ganpati Mandal and were setting up banners near Aakruti Tower in Gavanpada when a speeding BMW ran over them around 4 a.m.

Victim succumbs, driver flees scene

Thorat tragically succumbed to his injuries, while Patil remains in critical condition, receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. Onlookers immediately rushed to assist the injured men after the driver fled the scene. "Two workers of Mulund Cha Raja Ganpati Mandal were hit by a speeding car, one died, and one is in critical condition," a statement from Mumbai Police confirmed.

Arrest of the accused driver

The accused, Shakti Alagh, a resident of Mulund (West), was later arrested by Mulund Police in Navi Mumbai. Alagh admitted to taking his newly serviced second-hand BMW for a late-night drive after assisting with local Ganesh Mandal festivities. Fearful of being attacked after the incident, he parked his car at his residence before fleeing to Navi Mumbai on a bike.

Police have sent Alagh’s blood samples for testing to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol, though initial reports suggest he was not. Authorities will produce him in court to seek custody for further investigation.
